What Are We Thinking?

I dont mean to sound cold or anything, but the entire Jessica Lynch thing has blossomed way way out of proportion. We here all this news about Jessica Lynch and her escape, which truthfully, I don't think she played a major role in, but you dont hear about the Marine who saved the lives of his peers. Its rather ridiculous, that a woman who supposedly is supposed to be in the latest Penthouse (one of those magazines) is being honored as a national hero! What did she DO!? I feel that America doesnt seem to care about its soldiers, rather it cares about its survivors. With an attitude like that, how the hell do we Americans expect people to be willing to join the army? We're already going soft, at this day and age, I bet that more people would move to Canada than would fulfill their role in the draft! For Gods sake, our cops whine that they are not supplied with enough kevlar jackets, when our forces in Iraq, have only enough jackets for 4 out of 5 people?!?! How ridiculous is that!? And still, the media doesnt pay any attention to something like that, whereas they publish stories about 'amazing' Jessica Lynch, and glamourize her meager role in Iraq! She does not deserve the attention she is getting? How come we here about Jessica Lynch, but we hear almost nothing about those held hostage with her, Shoshana Johnson for example?

Anyways, any input on why the hell our nation makes such a big deal about those who survived, rather than those who actually performed honorable, and beyond the call of what is asked duties!

It's just marketing. Ask the question...how many troops do you think the army rescued during the war? (cause it's over now)

I'm willing to bet it was alot more than 2 women. But if you take the pretty girl next-door, farmer's daughter you inspire both hatred of the "enemy" and pride in your army for rescuing her.

They dont parade around the chubby communications guy who lost his leg.

Jessica Lynch would be the first person to agree that she shouldn't be getting all the attention she's getting.

But her story is one I think needs to be told. It tells of the human side of war.

Jessica Lynch will be in pain for the rest of her life. Her leg bones were essentially liquified. Her bowels and bladder are paralysed (which means she will probably have to wear a colonstomy bag for the rest of her life). Her spine was severely damaged and she will require pain medication for the rest of her life too as there are plates and pins throughout her body to keep her together.

Her story is a good story for us all because this is a girl from anytown USA who joined the army to serve her country and getting to know her means seeing the real price of war. Why war shouldn't be entered into lightly because there is a real human price to be paid.

I am in favor of what we are doing in Iraq. I have been from the beginning and I continue to be in favor of our action. But I did so knowing that sacrifices would have to be made. People like her help protect us, liberate the down trodden and make the world a better place.

Did you read my blog "Jessica Lynch vs Shoshana Johnson"? Do you know how many soldiers have fought bravely and suffered in war? Do you think the media could possibly cover all of those stories? The government and media latch onto stories that they think will help morale. Amongst all the ugliness of war, we were able to recover that pretty POW from nowhere USA. Makes me feel good.

About the whole Penthouse thing. Larry Flynt says he won't print pictures of her but plainly did his duty of soiling her name anyway. Nudie pictures does not a bad person make. She is young, naive, and very limited in her experiences. I can't imagine being bombarded with what she is going through at her age, my age, or any age.

Our soldiers don't sign on for recognition or glory. On that same note, we should treat them all with the highest regard. In a society that worships sports and entertainment stars, we should reevaluate who deserves our attention. If Jessica gets money and attention, at least it came from sacrifice for her country. Everyone compares her to fellow sodiers. Why does Rosie O'Donnell (just for example purposes)have fame and fortune and not you or me or anyone else? Life is unfair.

I watched the movie about Jessica and if things are true she got injured because the driver rear ended a duce and a half. Everyone except her died from the accident where are their stories? She wasn't wounded because she was shot, blown up, or because she sacificed herself to save others. The stupid officer in charged couldn't read a map and they got lost. He also paniced when the "SHIT HIT THE FAN." I am a disabled vet and she doesn't deserve all this attention, there are many others who deserve more, hell there are 52,000 that only got their names on a wall. This is what our nation has come to "SHOW ME THE MONEY". She is not the only vet that has to be on pain meds, can't go to the bathroom ,Hell I have these problems from my injuries but I can't get a book or movie offer. Maybe I should SUE

. You join the military (hopefully) with the possibility of going to war and dying that is part of the job. Any way that's how I feel.

Jessica Lynch is an Iconic figure.
You cannot have hundreds of iconic figures, because human beings cannot empathise with thousands of people at once, hence we look to individuals for inspiration and hope.

Jessi is not really a millitary icon, I would say she is more a symbol of human fortitude and dignity. She touches people's hearts, and makes people realise the sacrifices others make.

I really hope her body heals as much as possible...for someone so young, she is remarkably humble.

Bare in mind that she is getting $500,000 from the book (not $1 million), and that 25% of that is going to charity.

The media has made little mention of her Foundation.

How many Honest people are there in the public sphere?
